How Made-to-Measure Works

Bespoke is a word used loosely. At On Grain Studio it means one specific thing: your garment is drafted from your measurements, cut for you, and made for you alone. Nothing is pulled from stock and adjusted. Here is exactly how that works, stage by stage, and how long each part honestly takes.

Step 1 — Consultation

Everything starts with a conversation at the studio. We discuss the occasion, the silhouette you have in mind, fabrics, and — openly, early — budget, because a design brief that ignores budget wastes everyone's time. Bring reference images, jewellery, fabric, or nothing at all.

First consultations usually run an hour. Book in advance so a stylist can give you the full session.

Step 2 — Design

We translate the conversation into a specific design: silhouette, neckline, sleeve, length, fabric, colour palette and the placement of any embroidery. This is the stage to be difficult. Changing a neckline on paper costs nothing; changing it after cutting costs a great deal.

Step 3 — Measurement

We take a full set of measurements at the studio. We strongly prefer taking them ourselves rather than working from numbers sent over message, because measurement error is the single most common cause of a garment that does not sit correctly — and because where the fit issue comes from measurements you supplied rather than ones we took, alteration charges may apply.

Wear or bring the undergarments and the heel height you intend to wear with the finished piece. Both change the measurements meaningfully.

Step 4 — Production

Production begins once your design, measurements and advance payment are confirmed. Your pattern is drafted, the fabric is cut, and construction and any hand embroidery begin.

• Standard bespoke garments: two to four weeks
• Heavily embellished or bridal pieces: four to six weeks
• Rush orders: subject to availability, and may attract an additional charge

Please note that once fabric has been cut, cancellations are not accepted and the advance is non-refundable. Cancellations before cutting may be eligible for a partial refund, less a processing fee.

Step 5 — Fittings

Fittings happen on your body, not on a mannequin. This is where the difference between made-to-measure and mass production becomes visible: we refine the drape, the seam positions and the finish until the garment sits correctly when you move, sit and raise your arms — not just when you stand still.

Bridal and heavily constructed pieces normally take more than one fitting.

Step 6 — Finishing and Delivery

Before a garment leaves the studio, we verify the measurements against your specification, check fabric integrity and colour consistency, and give it a final press. Kolkata clients usually collect from the studio; we also ship across India.

After delivery, one complimentary alteration is included within seven days for minor fit adjustments.

What Bespoke Costs

Price depends on fabric, construction complexity and the amount of hand work — a plain bespoke blouse and a hand-embroidered bridal lehenga are not comparable commissions. We give a clear quotation at the design stage, before any commitment. If you have a fixed budget, say so at the first consultation and we will design within it rather than around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between made-to-measure and off-the-rack?

Off-the-rack garments are cut to standard sizes and then altered towards your body. A made-to-measure garment is drafted from your measurements at the pattern stage, so the shoulder, bust, waist and hip fall where they should by design rather than by adjustment.

How long does the whole process take?

Standard bespoke garments take two to four weeks in production; heavily embellished or bridal pieces take four to six weeks. Add time before that for consultation and design, and after for fittings. For a dated event, start at least two to three months ahead.

What happens at the first consultation?

We talk through the occasion, silhouette, fabric and budget, look at any references you bring, and take your measurements. Nothing is committed until the design and quotation are agreed.

What if the fit is not right when I collect it?

One complimentary alteration is included within seven days of delivery for minor fit adjustments. Kolkata clients visit the studio; for clients elsewhere we guide the adjustment or arrange alterations with a trusted local partner where possible.
